What would the benefit of that be?

Two extra cylinders = more power strokes = more torque relative to the same power output with fewer cylinders/power strokes, air cooling = no need for a radiator and heat exchanging fluid = massive weight savings even if you don’t get a power gain over the NA four, coolness factor and rarity; not too many flat six air cooled 944s out there...
You could likely get the power by just turbo-ing the 4, but you won’t get a linear response that way. You could have just SBC’d/LS1’d it, but everybody and their mother does that. These folks had the time/energy/funds for something else, so why not?

Your last two words sum it up best.
“Why not?”
Sometimes it’s cool when car guys do things just because they think it’s cool or a bit different, with no real logic behind it.

Are there any modifications to the front to increase airflow? Otherwise that sounds dicey.

fair enough. I didn;t even realize there was a difference in cylender count. I figured on the wieght savings but I wasn;t sure if there would be a power difference.

I have been trying to track down this car for a while. The most I could find was this was used in Sweden in endurance racing and may have been driven by Björn Persson at some point.

Good, now I don't feel so crazy for wanting to do this to my Subaru.
